  • This painting was part of a 30-day challenge to paint every day. I loved the painting so much that I'm now offering it as a fine art giclée print, so you can love it, too. Sun Legs was inspired by the beams of autumn light outside my studio door, radiating from the sun and piercing through an opening in the trees. A constant source of inspiration.

                • This painting was inspired by Mary Oliver's poem, "Morning at Great Pond." The original painting is nearly 7 feet wide and was painted in a tiny dorm room in college.

                  Morning at Great Pond
                  by Mary Oliver

                  It starts like this:
                  forks of light
                  slicking up
                  out of the east,
                  flying over you,
and what's left of night --
                  its black waterfalls,
                  its craven doubt --
                  dissolves like gravel
                  as the sun appears
                  trailing clouds
                  of pink and green wool,
                  igniting the fields,
                  turning the ponds
                  to plates of fire.
                  The creatures there
                  are dark flickerings
                  you make out
                  one by one
                  as the light lifts --
                  great blue herons,
                  wood ducks shaking
                  their shimmering crests --
                  and knee-deep
                  in the purple shallows
                  a deer drinking:
                  as she turns
                  the silver water
                  crushes like silk,
                  shaking the sky,
                  and you're healed then
                  from the night, your heart
                  wants more, you're ready
                  to rise and look!
                  to hurry anywhere!
                  to believe in everything.

                • This painting embodies many ideas. Some see the inner workings of an engineer's brain. Some see a nude man lounging. And, some see a lobster. What do you see?

Commissioned by a close family friend, Herminio. This was my first commissioned piece of art that ultimately sparked my art career. I acquired the painting back after Herminio passed away due to diabetes complications. 10% of the proceeds from the sale of this edition will be donated to the American Diabetes Association in honor of Herminio.

                • About the painting:
When I was fresh out of college, living in Portland, Oregon, doing everything BUT painting, my friend Herminio called me up and told me he wanted to commission me to do a big piece. When asked what he wanted me to paint, he said, “An abstract of either a nude man lounging, a dead man floating in water, or a woman sitting at a long, rectangular kitchen table, with the light shining on the left side of her face and she’s looking at you, surprised. If you can do all three, that would be great.” So I did, all three. Once I was done, I pulled the big canvas off the wall, rolled it up, put it in the back of my truck and drove it down to Sacramento. I built a frame and stretched the canvas on it in Herminio's driveway. It hung in his home office, on a lavish red wall for many years. Sadly, I acquired the painting back in 2016 when Herminio suddenly passed away due to diabetes complications. This painting holds a great amount of meaning as not only is it my very first piece of commissioned art, from someone who believed in me, but it is also the piece that sparked me to build a career with my art. For it was the leftover paint from this painting that I created a painting of my mom's dog, Garbo, the pet portrait that was the catalyst for my business of Pet PawTraits.

                • Wrinkles around the nose of a gorilla are the equivalent of fingerprints in humans. Using binoculars and a sketch pad, Dian Fossey drew sketches of noses on the gorillas she studied. I didn't realize this when I was working on my portrait of Mizano, but I remember being fascinated by the wrinkles around his nose. I was using photos my wife had taken when she was lucky enough to cross paths with Mizano during her time in Uganda. Years later, upon receiving news that Mizano was killed by antelope poachers, I was immediately inspired to paint his portrait.

I love giving to causes I believe in which is why 50% of the profits for each print sold will be donated to The Ellen Fund, which supports #conservation efforts for endangered species, starting with the wild mountain #gorilla.

Read more about Mizano's story by clicking "about the painting" tab above.

                    In Memory of Mizano:
A Mountain Gorilla I will never forget

                    (Written By Gina Flaharty)

Early one August morning in 2009 I set out on foot with 2 forest rangers and 3 travel companions in search of a family of mountain gorillas that had made their home within the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. The Habinyanja family had been habituated to the presence of humans over many years in an effort to improve research and promote tourism. The money generated from tourism is returned in an effort to preserve the forest, improve research and discourage poachers. The rules are strict and the rangers follow them. You in no way are allowed to do anything that would harm the gorillas physically or mentally. And if you find the family, you get to be in their presence for exactly one hour, that’s it.

After a couple hours of walking up and down mountain hillsides we were informed that the family was sitting across from us in a forested area on a steep mountain slope. Our hearts raced at the thought of spotting a gorilla and being able to “hang out” with the family for an hour. As we began our steep hike up our excitement grew as we caught our first glimpse of a mother and her baby lounging in an area that had served as a bed for the night. Continuing up this steep climb, we could barely maintain our footing when suddenly out of nowhere we were startled by a grunting noise, branches moving and before any of us knew what was going on a huge gorilla had ran past, stole the GPS out of our rangers hand and made himself comfortable about 15 feet in front of us. This was Mizano, our ranger explained, he is known as the family comedian, a jokester per say, who likes to play pranks. The ranger then makes a grunting noise, Mizano replies, giving our ranger confirmation that he is comfortable and ok with us being there.

For the next 40 minutes we stood there while gripping our feet to the side of the hill above Mizano, watching him; every move, breath, expression. He was beautiful, amazing and unforgettable. He eventually left the GPS for our ranger to retrieve and when our hour was up we had to say goodbye to Mizano and his gorilla family.

When I got the email last week that Mizano had died I was in shock. I looked at the photos of him I had taken and my heart sank.  Mizano was killed by antelope poachers. He was speared through the shoulders and neck by poachers who had encountered him while looking for antelope in the forest.  My heart goes out to Mizano’s gorilla family and the community of humans around him who have worked so hard to preserve his species. With only 786 Mountain Gorillas left, Mizano’s loss is felt across the world. Farewell Mizano. I am honored to have met you.

Poaching continues to be a huge threat to the remaining mountain gorillas within Africa. For information about Mountain Gorillas and their conservation visit the International Gorilla Conservation Programme.
