Wrinkles around the nose of a gorilla are the equivalent of fingerprints in humans. Using binoculars and a sketch pad, Dian Fossey drew sketches of noses on the gorillas she studied. I didn't realize this when I was working on my portrait of Mizano, but I remember being fascinated by the wrinkles around his nose. I was using photos my wife had taken when she was lucky enough to cross paths with Mizano during her time in Uganda. Years later, upon receiving news that Mizano was killed by antelope poachers, I was immediately inspired to paint his portrait.
